Get away from it all and get to know yourself

Going away to a retreat affords you the opportunity to escape from the demands and worries of everyday life.  A retreat is a sanctuary for the soul, a place where you can relax completely, stop doing and simply be for a while.  It enables you to get in touch with your inner being and to embark on a wonderful journey of self discovery with other like minded people who are also on that journey.  A great sense of community can develop as a retreat progresses resulting in lifelong friendships developing.

A retreat can be highly beneficial when your life is at a crossroads and you are uncertain what to do or where to go next.  Or you might simply need space and tranquility in order to get back in touch with yourself and find your way again after a difficult period in your life.

So how does a retreat differ from a holiday?  A retreat gives you the opportunity to heighten your awareness of self and to clarify what is essential in your life and what is not working for you.  It can be a challenging and life changing experience.

The day to day program in a retreat will vary according to the type of retreat you go to.  Most retreats will include periods of meditation, workshops and study groups.  Some will have Yoga or Tai Chi as well.

Where

There are Retreat centres all over the world.  You can chose to go to one in your own country which ultimately will be less expensive and technically due to its very nature it is likely to be equally effective regardless of where it is situated.

Some people prefer to combine a retreat with travel and culture.  This is especially so for those on a deep spiritual quest, many of whom may chose to go to Retreats in India for example, in order to better experience the spiritual element.  There are active retreat holidays where you can for example do a walk in the Himalayan mountains and experience the spiritual vibe of the area.
